With Sensei Ernst's permission, I have invited Senpai Shaun Lee (3rd Degree Black Belt/ Trainee of the ISKF Instructor Trainees Program/Instructor at the Dominion Karate Club) to observe the Kyu Exam on January 24 Sunday. He is interested in DC's testing routines and students' performance. Also, he has kindly agreed to be present 30 minutes before the exam time to prep my BBC members for the testing. He gives exams very frequently in his club, and also has judged many Dan Exams in Philadelphia and tournaments as a trainee who is close to graduate. The test will begin at 10:30AM. Shaun and I will be downstairs by 10:00AM for those who want his last minute advices and especially a few tips for Bunkai of your kata. Remember, Sensei Ernst WILL ask you Bunkai of one part of your kata in testing. Shaun is very good with Bunkai. He will predict what parts you must know for the test. I worked through the whole Bunkai of Bassai Dai with him last Sunday so I would be able to pass it on to you on Tuesday BBC class. But, as you know, the Tuesday class was cancelled due to snow.
As I understand, the BBC members who are taking the test are four:
Reto 3B
Peter 3B
Andrew 3B
Dima 5
Dima, if you come early at 10:00AM, I can cover Bunkai for Heian 5 for you, while Shaun is covering Bassai Dai Bunkai for the brown belts.
If you are willing to come for this prep, you can just show up (not before 10AM! Because Bob wont' show up to open the facility until 10:00AM) OR text me at 202-253-1456/email me at Your.Hiroko@Gmail.com to let me know. I wish all of you the best of luck. I am a firm believer of "test is another training". If I were you, I would test every time (every 3 months?) even for a half kyu or nothing. Just to tune myself up for testing (it's is great training itself) and get Sensei's advices for your best performance. One you get the 1st Kyu, it is good to wait for some time more before the Dan Exam.
