Now that the East Coast Tournament is over, it is time to concentrate on the Kyu Test on May 8 (Sunday) and Dan Exam on May 24 (Sat). I assume that all of you want to test except for those who are injured. We have several people in dojo who are injured at this time; including a few BBC members. I hope that those people get well and are able to test in May. Let me know ASAP of your plan. We will focus on Kihon forms, Kata, and Testing Kumite for the rest of April and May.

Dear Hiroko Senpai thank you for the update. I would like to train for the May 8 Test, however I do have a handicap and that is that this whole week I am away on spring break and wont be able to train. I hope the 2.5 weeks up to the 8 will be enough to get on speed again. Sorry I cannot make it to the BBC today, next week I will be there again. best Reto

Only Andrey showed up for the BBC, and he needed a private class for his upcoming Dan Exam any way. As I mentioned before, many people are injured or out of town right now. Also, usually after a big karate event, many people just want to take a break here in the U.S. (Not in Japan, lol). And the weather! Sensei Ernst taught an excellent class last night. There were only five adult students present and one brand new beginner. BTW, I made a mistake. The Kyu Exam is on May 4th Sunday, and not the 8th. So, a little less time for all to prepare. I quote here a comment that Senpai(Prof.) JD Sawnson of ISKF made today on Facebook about ranking system and exam taking: " [...]As far as rank and testing.... In my opinion as a College professor, it is really important to test. Not for the sake of acquiring rank but rather for the reason to put yourself on the line, step up to mark and be measured. Generally (I can think of two exceptions out of the thousands of people I have been on the floor with) people study that little bit harder knowing there is an end goal/or test at the end. Without the test, students sometimes become complacent, (still train and work hard), But without that extra push, and focus that an exam provides, progress can be slower. This is backed by a ton of pedagogical data based in the classroom. In my experience, karate is the same.[...]" I completely agree with him. Osu! Hiroko

Hello, BBC members. I hope that those who are out of town are having a great time. I also hope that those who are injured are having a good recovery. Due to the rainy weather and hard work in the East Coast Tournament, the class was very small, and Andrey was only one who was there for the BBC. Sensei Ernst taught a great class (for only 5 adults) as he focused on the "striking techniques", using all sorts of hand shapes and elbow strikes. I had a great training! Here is a comment for Andrey. Osu. Hiroko
Andrey: Watch the "Masao Kagawa" Youtube and examine Mawashi-geri kihon techniques. Also watch and read materials for Kihon techniques. Still feel that your hand and foot techniques are not in synchronization, thus look much weaker that one would expect from your body type. In general, your hip joints are tight and are preventing you from better Mawashigeri or Kokutsh, Kibadachi positions. It is why you should not compromise and keep pushing beyond your limit as I made you do. Squats with Shinai; clear Mawashigeri prep position; lower Kokutsu dachi, etc.
