We will do all Heian's, Tekki, and Bassai Dai for the East Coast Tournament. During the regular class, I hope that other upper belt katas would be addressed. (Sensei Ernst is supposed to teach today. If he is busy, they Paul and I will split the class). I may include mini Bunkai here and there. But the goal today is to prep for the tournament. Reto, are you participating? Osu. Hiroko

Senpai Hiroko, I would have loved to participate in the tournament. Unfortunately, that saturday is exactly the one of two saturdays I have to work because we have annual meetings with our ministers coming from capital, no chance for me to be absent. I hope there will be another opportunity this year. Oss! Reto

Dear my Brown Belt Club members. First of all..., GOOD SPIRIT! Sensei Ernst walked up to me after the BBC class before the regular class last night and mentioned how happy and proud he had felt by looking at you guys' spirit. He said that he was proud that many of you seemed to have been showing up regularly. You made me proud. Thanks, my warriors. Please keep up the good job!
Andrey:As always, fair kata and good kumite. Time to fix your pointed foot when snap back, or I will seriously consider buying you a pair of pointe shoes. What is your shoe size? Once during the Kihon in the regular class, you did a combination with nicely flexed snap backs right after I pointed out about your feet. Your ankles need the muscle memory. It is hard to get used to, but keep paying attention. Also, head movements during the kata is not perfect. It is necessary to win in the tournament. If you are interested, I would like to work you through this point and other matters, such as focus of eyes, facial expressions, and Kiai. You need to create a bit more of drama to go with your fair kata techniques and strength. Also, I noticed your Uraken looked weak, just like Dima's Uraken. Read my comment to Dima below, and work on it.
Andrew:Welcome back. You need to get rid of the sky kicking foot to advance to the next level. Next time, we will do the wall drills with Maegeri, and you will see how you cannot make a right contact with the wall with your sky kicking foot. Remind me to do this drill next time. Generally, I feel that your techniques look too "composed". I want to see more energy. I might have mentioned before, but your kata looks small, and given the size of your body and long limbs, it should not look so. Exaggerate on expansion and contraction. That will make your kata look more interesting, I think. Also, as I mentioned in the regular class, come up with your favorite combination of 2, 3, 4, even 5 consecutive techniques to use in sparring. Go forward and run after the opponent. After all, taller/bigger persons have more advantage in kumite, and if you do it with speed and determination, no many people could evade that. Don't do it when you spar with me
Peter-san:Great spirit and enthusiasm as always. You need to correct your Shuto-uke prep arm/hand position before the tournament. It will be judged negatively. An example is the turn right after first Kiai point of Bassai Dai. We worked on it several times, and you almost got it, but make sure to master it. When the hands are prepping for Shuto-uke in that one footed stance, make sure to raise the other knee higher to make it like a prep for Yoko-Keage. Generally, need to work on acquiring larger range of motion on shoulder joints and more twist of the hip. Do abundant of hip twist stretches: lie on the floor face up with arms open; and bend one knee and twist to one side; one leg remains straight on the floor. Find more variations to hip twist stretches and do it all the time. It should improve your performance. Do this as a prep for the tournament, too. Do not neglect the flexibility training. I want to see more hip rotation and distinction between the square and side hip from you.
Ana: Ana, I was very proud of you to see your catching up with rather unusual and complicated Kihon drills in the regular class and executing good forms in your ability. For Bassai Dai, "Sukui-Uke" after "Yamazuki" should be more of a lower level block. Your blocks are too high on your shoulder level. Next time, I will try to do wall drills with Maegeri and Ushirogeri to experiment the correct targeting and forms, as you requested before. Remind me next time. Also, I was watching your Kumite today and thought a few things: First of all, considering that you were not even able to make a single step forward naturally in kumite last fall, there has been a tremendous improvement. I talk about you with a couple of my fellows, and they acknowledge your recent efforts and improvement as well. Second, you need to work on not hop but slide to reach to the wall or the opponent. For this purpose, repetitious wall drills like we did yesterday and Suriashi training with a Shinai will help you a lot. Let's talk again when we get our Shinai's. Third. I noticed that you make an extra small inward step before you slide. (ex. Slide and kizami zuki). That is unnecessary. Feel a spring in your back leg always while free Kamae, and that spring will push you forward when you want to slide forward. As to front leg, your knee will be bend and go forward when you slide, and your front foot should not adjust to waste time. Dima:I was some good timing/ distance while free sparring in the BBC. I saw that you were looking for openings constantly, and that is good. Make techniques more and more clear to "score". Some punches could have scored, but "weak" or "not finished". Practice to commit to your techniques. As I mentioned to Andrew above, considering your size, if you come up with combination techniques as you commit, it would have a great intimidation effect. In Kihon during the regular training, I noticed that your Uraken is weak. It should come from side of your ear and not from your chest. Vibrate your hip at the execution of Uraken.
